Rockies Execute Fifth Historic Triple Play vs. Athletics

    DENVER — In a rare defensive feat, the Colorado Rockies executed their fifth triple play in franchise history during a game against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday evening.

    The remarkable play unfolded in the second inning. With two runners on base, Jacob Wilson hit a sharp one-hopper to third baseman Ryan McMahon, setting the sequence in motion.

    McMahon quickly stepped on third base and fired the ball to second baseman Kyle Farmer, who then relayed it to first baseman Michael Toglia to complete the 5-4-3 triple play.

    McMahon celebrated the impressive play with a fist pump, highlighting the team’s defensive prowess.

    Prior to this, the Rockies last turned a triple play against the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 1, 2015.

    Meanwhile, for the Athletics, this was their first encounter with a triple play since June 20, 2021, during a matchup with the New York Yankees when Sean Murphy hit into one.

    Continuing their defensive strength, the Rockies induced another notable play in the third inning when the Athletics hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
