Former Vice President Mike Pence is set to be honored with the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his decisive actions in upholding the U.S. Constitution by not supporting efforts from then-President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 election results. This accolade is meant to acknowledge Pence’s choice to protect democratic processes during a tumultuous time, as announced by the Kennedy family on Thursday.
The JFK Library Foundation highlights Pence’s critical role on January 6, 2021, when he resisted intense pressure from Trump to dismiss the election results from key states where Trump baselessly alleged voter fraud. Pence, asserting he had no legal authority to change the outcome, stood firm against these demands.
During the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters, many of whom voiced threats against him, Pence was safeguarded by the Secret Service, narrowly escaping the rioting mob. Despite the perilous situation, Pence chose not to flee the Capitol, ignoring security recommendations in order to ensure the certification process of President Joe Biden’s electoral victory continued after the chaos subsided.
Trump criticized Pence’s defiance, claiming he failed to act to protect the nation and the Constitution, as documented in posts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Pence, however, remarked on the dangers posed by Trump’s inflammatory language which he believed put his family and others at risk.
The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, named after President Kennedy’s 1957 book, is awarded to public officials who demonstrate integrity by taking a stand despite potential political or personal sacrifices. Caroline Kennedy and Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s daughter and grandson, remarked that Pence’s stance embodies Kennedy’s vision of political courage altering history’s path.
Expressing his gratitude, Pence conveyed feeling “deeply humbled and honored” by the recognition. He reflected on how President Kennedy’s legacy has inspired him since his youth and expressed pride in joining the ranks of esteemed Americans previously honored with the award.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 4 at the JFK Library in Boston.
