LONDON — Former Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez is exploring potential opportunities with various teams as he aims to make a return to the racing grid. Although his contract concluded unexpectedly two years ahead of schedule, Perez is hopeful about a comeback.
The former Red Bull driver, who has accumulated six race victories during his 14 years in Formula 1, was recently replaced by Liam Lawson. However, Lawson also had a challenging stint with the team, leading to a swift demotion.
Reflecting on his recent performances, the 35-year-old Mexican driver expressed his frustration over not being able to demonstrate his full capabilities last year due to the complexity of the car. “Especially last year, I didn’t get to show what I’m able to do as a driver,” Perez remarked in a conversation with the Formula 1 website. “Now, all of a sudden, people realize how difficult the car is to drive.”
Perez mentioned that following his final race in Abu Dhabi last December, where he served as a teammate to reigning F1 champion Max Verstappen, he has been approached by several teams. “There are a few very interesting projects out there. It’s good to be in this position knowing that people are keen on you as a driver,” he commented.
He further reflected on the capricious nature of the sport, stating, “People have short memories in F1. People realize that my position was not the easiest one in F1. And I’ve done extremely well overall.” Perez boasts an impressive record, having finished 39 times on the race podium and ranked as the runner-up to Verstappen in the 2023 driver standings.
From his residence in Mexico, Perez indicated that he plans to take a thoughtful approach, allowing himself “at least six months” to thoroughly evaluate his options before making any definite career decisions.
Meanwhile, at the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend, Max Verstappen’s new teammate at Red Bull is Yuki Tsunoda.
