NIAMEY, Niger — The military junta in Niger has released several former government officials and military officers following their detention after the 2023 coup. This action is part of the military’s stated objective to implement reforms in the West African nation. However, Mohamed Bazoum, the former president, remains under detention.
The releases were announced on state television, where a statement attributed this decision to recommendations provided by a national reform conference. This assembly has outlined potential pathways for Niger to transit towards democratic governance.
This development comes shortly after Abdourahamane Tchiani, the junta leader, assumed the interim presidency of Niger. He is set to lead the country for a five-year term under a new charter that replaces the prior constitution.
Many of those who regained their freedom were previously members of Bazoum’s cabinet. Notable figures among them include Mahamane Sani Issoufou, the former oil minister and son of a former president, and Foumakoye Gado, who had been leading the ruling party during Bazoum’s governance.
Others released include activists, at least one journalist, and military officials who had been imprisoned prior to the coup. The released military officers included those accused earlier of attempting a coup against Bazoum’s government. Additionally, some detainees had been held for extended periods for allegations such as “conspiracy against state security.”
