MINNEAPOLIS — An international student from the University of Minnesota is currently under detention by U.S. immigration officials, according to a statement from university leaders this week.

The student, who attends the business school on the Twin Cities campus, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement last Thursday at a location off campus, the university disclosed. The circumstances surrounding the student’s detention remain unclear and have been described by university officials as “deeply concerning.”

As to why the student was detained, no information has yet been made available. Inquiries for comments sent to ICE have not been returned as of Saturday.

University administrators are actively assisting the student by providing legal support and additional services. The leadership made it clear that the university had no prior communication or exchange of information with federal authorities regarding this matter, nor were they notified before the detention occurred.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz addressed the incident through a post on the social media platform X, stating that he is coordinating with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He emphasized the importance of the University of Minnesota as a hub for international education and research, highlighting the presence of numerous students with visas. Walz asserted, “We need answers.”
