Trapped in her vehicle since the preceding Thursday, Cassell survived by ingeniously using her sweatshirt to absorb water from a nearby creek, which she then managed to bring to her mouth. This life-saving maneuver kept her hydrated until the emergency response teams could extricate her. Her family had reported her missing days before her discovery, and they had been relentlessly searching the area along roads and ditches without success.
Cassell’s father, Delmar Caldwell, revealed that she had fallen asleep at the wheel, which led to the accident.
