ROME – Pope Francis joined the Vatican’s spiritual retreat remotely on Tuesday after receiving encouraging news from his medical team. The doctors have reported an improvement in his condition, stating that the pontiff is no longer in imminent danger due to the respiratory infection that has kept him hospitalized for nearly a month. This has been considered the most serious health threat to his 12-year leadership of the Catholic Church.
Although the 88-year-old pope’s condition is improving, doctors remain cautious. They have decided to extend his hospital stay for a few more days to continue treatment and anticipate a rehabilitation period that he is likely to require.
Dr. Carmelo D’Asero, an expert in infectious and geriatric diseases, notes that while Pope Francis appears to be recovering steadily, he is not yet fully out of danger. It remains uncertain when he will be able to return to the Vatican and whether he will need supplementary oxygen in the future.
“We must not forget that he has been hospitalized for one month,” said D’Asero, an expert not directly involved in Francis’ care. He noted, however, that Rome’s transition into warmer weather could be beneficial, as the pope’s bronchitis typically worsens in winter months.
“The arrival of spring is definitely good for those suffering from respiratory conditions,” commented D’Asero. “He may resume his duties, albeit with reduced workload and continuous monitoring for oxygen needs.”
Pope Francis, who has a chronic lung condition, continues to use supplemental oxygen during the day and a breathing mask at night.
The Vatican announced that Francis resumed physical and respiratory therapy on Tuesday and has been attending the Vatican’s spiritual retreat week via videoconference for the third consecutive day.
“Our spirits are lifted as it seems he is on the mend,” said Sister Maria Letizia Salazar, a nun who was praying for the pope outside the Gemelli hospital. “This news brings me great joy.”
This week holds significance for Pope Francis with important milestones: Tuesday marked the 67th anniversary of his joining the Jesuit religious order, while Thursday celebrates the 12th anniversary of his election as pope.
