ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos are strengthening their defensive core by bringing in two former players from the San Francisco 49ers. On Monday, the team reached three-year agreements with linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga, coinciding with the start of the legal tampering period before free agency officially opens on Wednesday.
Although the contracts won’t be officially announced until the new league year begins midweek, insiders have confirmed the details. These developments align with Broncos’ general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton’s goals expressed during the NFL scouting combine to fortify the center of their defense. Their strategy commenced with a weekend agreement to re-sign defensive tackle D.J. Jones with a three-year contract reportedly valued at $39 million.
Talanoa Hufanga’s contract is reportedly worth $45 million, including $20 million guaranteed. Despite being limited to 17 games over the past two years due to injuries, Hufanga is expected to boost a secondary that already includes standout players like Brandon Jones, who joined through free agency and had an impressive last season, and P.J. Locke, who performed admirably in 2024 even with a broken thumb.
Additionally, over the weekend, the Broncos secured a two-year, $12 million deal with Jarrett Stidham, who served as a backup to quarterback Bo Nix. On Monday, however, they experienced a loss when quarterback Zach Wilson signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Miami Dolphins.
Further changes in the Broncos’ roster include losing running back Javonte Williams to the Dallas Cowboys and inside linebacker Cody Barton to the Tennessee Titans. Barton delivered a strong performance throughout the season and was instrumental in stabilizing the defense after Alex Singleton suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
