Yankees star pitcher Gerrit Cole has traveled to California for a medical evaluation of his pitching elbow by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, said New York manager Aaron Boone during an interview with the YES Network.

The 34-year-old experienced some discomfort after his second spring training session last Thursday. Boone updated fans during a midgame interview against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, saying Cole’s current condition is uncertain.
“In LA, Cole is with Dr. ElAttrache, ensuring all expert opinions are considered to make the best decision moving forward,” Boone mentioned.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Cole indicated that he had already shared imaging results and was looking for further opinions to guide his next steps. “I haven’t lost hope yet,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed concerns in an interview with the New York Post, stating he was bracing for potentially bad news. He also divulged that Luis Gil, the American League’s Rookie of the Year, would miss at least three months due to a lat muscle strain.
Boone added, “You need to adapt and manage situations like these. It’s no dire situation and could open doors for others. If surgery is necessary, it might ensure long-term effectiveness rather than risking any compromise or significant hurdles. Gerrit has much to still accomplish in his career, and we hope he can continue thriving with the Yankees as successfully as he has so far.”
Cole joined the Yankees in 2020 with a monumental nine-year, $324 million contract. Last season, after clinching the American League Cy Young Award, the seasoned All-Star consulted with ElAttrache in March.
Cole’s season debut last year came on June 19, delayed by issues of nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. He recorded an 8-5 standing with a 3.41 ERA across 17 starts, followed by a 1-0 record and a 2.17 ERA in five postseason outings.
