TORONTO — Canada’s incoming prime minister pledged a rapid transition following a meeting on Monday with outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mark Carney shared that he had an extensive discussion with Trudeau about key issues such as U.S.-Canada relations, national security, and the timing of the leadership handover.

Carney assured the public, “The transition will be seamless and it will be quick,” while hinting at an imminent announcement. Having led two central banks in the past, Carney ascends to the prime ministership after gaining a sweeping 85.9% of votes to head the governing Liberal Party on Sunday.

Carney, aged 59, succeeds Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, though remaining in office until the new leader is officially appointed. There is speculation that Carney might call for a parliamentary election soon due to contentious trade threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. Alternatively, opposition parties in the Parliament could instigate an election with a no-confidence vote later this month.

Although Carney lacks political experience, his background includes an impressive tenure as a Goldman Sachs executive. His crisis management skills shone when he guided Canada through the financial turmoil while at the helm of the Bank of Canada in 2008, and later, in 2013, when he became the first non-citizen to lead the Bank of England since its inception, earning praise from both political sides in the U.K.

In contrast, opposition Conservatives aimed to leverage an election against Trudeau, pointing to rising living costs and immigration issues as key areas of his declining popularity. Yet Trump’s aggressive trade rhetoric and threats of incorporating Canada as the 51st U.S. state have ignited a wave of nationalism among Canadians. Many have responded with boycotts of American products and vocal protests at NHL and NBA events, boosting the Liberal Party’s standing in recent polls.

Carney remarked, “There is tremendous energy in the Liberal caucus. This is a united party full of energy.” Meanwhile, with President Trump delaying broader tariffs for a month, fears linger of an expanded trade conflict. Carney has vowed to maintain Canada’s retaliatory tariffs until the U.S. shows respect, asserting that Canada is prepared to win this confrontation.

Supporting Carney’s capability to enhance U.S.-Canada relations, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg praised him, stating, “Mark is one of the smartest, most capable, and steady-handed leaders I know.”
