DAVIDSON, N.C. — Stephen Curry, the prominent guard for the Golden State Warriors, is extending his basketball influence by taking on a new role as an assistant general manager for Davidson College’s basketball teams. This endeavor marks a first in U.S. major professional sports, with no active player before Curry assuming an administrative position at a college level. Despite this new role, Curry will maintain his commitment to the Warriors on the court.
Collaborating with his wife, Ayesha, along with Don, Matt, and Erica Berman, who are long-time Davidson benefactors, Curry is launching an eight-figure fund dedicated to the college’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. The college has welcomed them as advisors to contribute their valuable experience and dedication to enhancing both sports programs, according to a statement released on Monday.
Part of Curry’s resources and support will come from the Under Armour global sports marketing team, aligning with his existing sponsorships. His aim is to enable Davidson’s scholar-athletes to thrive in the evolving college sports landscape, where athletes can now monetize their name, image, and likeness. This opportunity was not available when Curry was a student-athlete at Davidson from 2006 to 2009.
Curry, who was a three-time Southern Conference first-team honoree during his collegiate career, reminisced, “The Davidson experience is top notch. My journey from being at Davidson in 2006 to where I am now showed me that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni while continuing to uphold the Davidson legacy. I want other talented students of high character to enjoy the same experience.”
Chris Clunie, Davidson’s vice president and director of athletics, emphasized the central role of basketball at the college. He noted that the success of the basketball programs significantly contributes to revenue and overall visibility, bolstering all athletic initiatives at Davidson.
Davidson’s men’s basketball team currently holds a 16-15 record this season.
Curry is committed to investing in the incoming student-athletes at Davidson, ensuring they are not shortchanged by market valuations. The aim is to embody the brand of Davidson with academic integrity, enabling a seamless professional transition in sports or broader life arenas.
Joining Curry in this administrative capacity is Matt Berman, who will also serve as an assistant general manager. Curry added, “We will be a resource and sounding board for the program, nurturing personal relationships with each athlete to guide them through their journey at Davidson.”
