LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Rams have secured the services of wide receiver Davante Adams, signing him to a two-year contract on Sunday. This deal marks a return to California for the acclaimed receiver, who has achieved All-Pro status three times. Reports indicate that the contract could be worth up to $46 million, positioning Adams as a key offensive weapon alongside Puka Nacua for quarterback Matthew Stafford following the team’s decision to part ways with Cooper Kupp, the Super Bowl 56 MVP.
Adams had been released by the Jets earlier in the week, concluding his brief stint with New York, which began when he was acquired from the Raiders last October. Prior to his time with the Jets, Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers formed a formidable partnership during their eight years together with the Green Bay Packers, continuing their collaboration for 11 games at New York.
Celebrated for his exceptional performance in the NFL over almost a decade, Adams boasts six seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards, maintaining a consecutive streak of five such seasons. Additionally, he registered two seasons with 997 yards. His skillful play includes earning Pro Bowl honors six times, adept route-running, and impressive playmaking despite not having outstanding speed. Last season, Adams achieved 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns with the Jets, highlighted by an explosive 198-yard game against Jacksonville.
The Rams appear to have found a replacement for Kupp, their reliable receiver over the last eight years under head coach Sean McVay, in Adams. Kupp, who is nearing the end of his contract with two lucrative years remaining, is expected to have his future addressed by the team soon, with a roster bonus deadline approaching.
Following a solid season where the Rams finished 10-7, captured the NFC West title, and performed well in the playoffs, Adams’ addition raises their aspirational prospects for Super Bowl contention. Excitement over Adams joining the team resonated amongst the Rams’ roster, with defensive back Quentin Lake expressing the sentiment by sharing, “Things just got real serious,” on social media while teammate Nacua humorously requested a fast-food favor from Adams, highlighting his previous commercial appearances for Taco Bell.
In addition to Adams, the Rams secured a one-year, $10 million deal with Tutu Atwell. Despite variations in playtime, Atwell’s new contract suggests a prominent role as the third receiver, following Adams and Nacua. The team’s future expectations extend to Jordan Whittington, who is anticipated to see increased playing opportunities come 2025, following his contributions in the past season.
With a decorated career tally of 957 receptions, 11,844 yards, and 103 touchdowns, Adams’ Bay Area roots coincide with his collegiate success at Fresno State, rounding out his enduring football legacy.
