MINNEAPOLIS — In a strategic move to bolster their roster, the Minnesota Vikings have secured a new two-year contract worth $20 million with running back Aaron Jones, a decision that will keep the esteemed player from entering free agency. The deal, which was announced on Sunday, includes $13 million in guaranteed money.

Jones, at 30, made a strong impression with the Vikings following a notable career with the Green Bay Packers, where he spent seven seasons after being drafted from Texas-El Paso in 2017. In his first season with Minnesota in 2024, Jones delivered career-best performances, recording 255 rushing attempts and achieving 1,138 rushing yards. Initially joining the Vikings on a one-year contract for $7 million after his release from the Packers—a move driven by salary cap considerations—he followed in the footsteps of past notable Packers who transitioned to the Vikings lineup.

Jones distinguished himself as the third player in Vikings franchise history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in his debut year, joining the ranks of Adrian Peterson in 2007 and Chester Taylor in 2006. Throughout the season, Jones maintained a consistent presence, playing in every game for only the second time in his career, while also earning recognition as the team’s nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award and the Salute to Service Award.

Ranking sixth all-time among NFL running backs with a minimum of 1,000 career carries, Jones boasts an impressive average of 4.9 yards per rush. His impact, alongside improvements in the Vikings’ blocking, propelled the team from ranking 29th in rushing yards in 2023 to tying for 19th in 2024. Ty Chandler initially shared backfield duties with Jones, but Jones’ reliability and durability led to increased gameplay opportunities as determined by coach Kevin O’Connell and his staff.

The Vikings now turn their attention to resolving their quarterback situation with Sam Darnold approaching free agency, which could pose financial challenges for the team’s roster strategy. With J.J. McCarthy recovered from knee surgery and poised to potentially take over starting duties, the Vikings are also likely to seek a seasoned veteran quarterback for support. Daniel Jones, who was acquired for depth late in the previous season, may provide a more budget-friendly option than Darnold.

In addition, the Vikings aim to enhance their team during the upcoming free agency period by targeting improvements at guard, defensive tackle, and cornerback positions.
