PHOENIX — Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff, who was absent from last season due to shoulder surgery, is optimistic about making his return in a minor league spring training game this week.

After completing his fourth live batting practice session on Wednesday, Woodruff consulted with his surgeon, Dr. Keith Meister, on Thursday. The surgeon provided favorable feedback regarding his recovery.

Woodruff shared with MLB.com, “I had a good checkup. Same old, same old. I’m progressing, I’m recovering, and he said: ‘You’ve got to progress to games.’” Reflecting on his practice sessions, he added, “That first live gave me some adrenaline, but doing it repeatedly, it wears off. I initially hit 92 mph and have maintained a consistent velocity. I haven’t hit a wall, but I’ve plateaued. Now, it’s time to get into a game.”

Woodruff’s potential minor league appearance might occur as soon as Tuesday when the games commence. Should this outing be successful, he foresees moving forward to participate in a major league game during the Cactus League.

“I’m right on track,” remarked Woodruff confidently.

With an impressive record of 46-26 and a 3.10 ERA over seven seasons with the Brewers, the 32-year-old pitcher was performing exceptionally well in 2023. He posted a 5-1 record alongside a career-best 2.28 ERA over 11 starts before sustaining his injury.
