WASHINGTON — On early Sunday morning, near the White House, a man reportedly armed and believed to have traveled from Indiana was shot by agents of the U.S. Secret Service following a confrontation, authorities reported.
The incident, which occurred around midnight, unfolded approximately a block away from the White House. Fortunately, no other individuals were injured during the shooting, as detailed in a statement released by the Secret Service.
At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was in Florida. Prior to this, the Secret Service received intelligence from local law enforcement regarding an allegedly “suicidal individual” suspected to be traveling from Indiana. Agents subsequently located the man’s vehicle along with a person who matched the given description.
“Upon the officers’ approach, the individual presented a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation during which our personnel discharged their weapons,” the Secret Service revealed in their statement.
The man is currently hospitalized, although the Secret Service has not disclosed any updates regarding his condition.
As the shooting involved law enforcement, the Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of conducting the investigation. However, at this time, further details have not been released by the department.
