In the early hours of Sunday, a man believed to have traveled from Indiana was shot near the White House by U.S. Secret Service agents following a dramatic encounter, authorities reported.
The incident, which took place around midnight just a block from the presidential residence, involved no other injuries, according to a statement released by the Secret Service. At the time, President Donald Trump was in Florida.
The Secret Service was alerted by local police agencies about a “suicidal individual” journeying from Indiana. Officers soon located a vehicle and an individual fitting the description near the White House.
“Upon approaching the suspect, the person brandished a weapon, leading to a confrontation in which our personnel discharged their firearms,” detailed the Secret Service in their statement.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital, though the Secret Service has not provided an update on his current health status.
Due to the involvement of law enforcement in the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department has taken on the responsibility of investigating the incident. Attempts to reach the department for further comment on Sunday were unsuccessful.
