WASHINGTON — A potentially dangerous incident unfolded near the White House as an armed individual was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents during a confrontation in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Secret Service reported that the lone suspect, who is believed to have come from Indiana, posed a threat after brandishing a firearm.
This event transpired around midnight, approximately a block away from the White House. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed during the incident. At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was in Florida, away from the scene of the confrontation.
According to a statement released by the Secret Service, local police had initially provided information regarding an allegedly “suicidal individual” traveling from Indiana. Acting on this tip, agents were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle and subsequently identify a person fitting the description nearby.
As the Secret Service officers approached the suspect, he displayed a firearm, leading to an armed face-off during which shots were fired by the agents. The individual was subsequently wounded and hospitalized, with his current medical condition described as “unknown” by Secret Service officials.
Due to this incident involving law enforcement personnel, the Metropolitan Police Department has been tasked with conducting an investigation to ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding the shooting. Efforts to reach the police department for additional comments on Sunday were unsuccessful, as messages were not immediately returned.
