FRISCO, Texas — In an exciting match on Saturday night, defenders Andrew Gutman and Leonardo Barroso scored back-to-back goals late in the second half to help Chicago Fire defeat FC Dallas 3-1, spoiling Dallas’ home opener.
Dallas initially took the lead in the 57th minute when Logan Farrington, assisted by Anderson Julio, netted his first goal of the season. Farrington had an impressive debut season last year, contributing four goals and eight assists across 29 appearances, including 10 starts. Meanwhile, Julio, who joined the club this season, not only provided the assist but also has already recorded a goal. Previously, he tallied 26 goals and six assists over four seasons with Real Salt Lake.
Chicago responded by leveling the score in the 82nd minute. Andrew Gutman, successfully assisted by Hugo Cuypers and rising star Sergio Oregel, secured his first goal of the season. Cuypers marked his first assist of the season, adding to Gutman’s tally of 12 career goals. The assist was also a milestone for the 19-year-old Oregel, who achieved his first career assist in his third start and fourth overall appearance.
Barroso then shifted the game in favor of Chicago with a decisive goal off a rebound. The scoring was wrapped up by Cuypers, who converted a penalty kick in the first minute of stoppage time after being fouled by Sebastien Ibeagha. Cuypers had previously scored two goals in a draw with D.C. United the prior week.
Chicago Fire’s goalkeeper Chris Brady played a crucial role in securing victory by making five saves, including a key stop on a penalty kick attempted by Dallas forward Petar Musa in the dying moments of the game. On the other side, Maarten Paes, Dallas’ goalkeeper, made four saves. Dallas, guided by new coach Eric Quill, began their season with an away win and a draw before this home game.
Looking ahead, Chicago will be facing Toronto FC in an away game next Saturday, while FC Dallas is set to host the Vancouver Whitecaps on the same day.
