The New York Giants have secured their quarterback for the upcoming season by re-signing Tommy DeVito. Announced Saturday, DeVito’s return averts his status as an exclusive rights free agent, with a one-year contract valued at $1.03 million. DeVito originally joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent from Illinois in 2023 and has since started eight games.

As free agency approaches, the Giants face transitions in their quarterback lineup with backups Drew Lock and Tim Boyle about to test the market, leaving DeVito as the primary quarterback on the roster. The team’s strategy likely includes acquiring a seasoned quarterback in free agency, where Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are potential targets. Rodgers, recently released by the Jets, boasts impressive numbers with 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns last season, despite the team’s 5-12 record. Meanwhile, Wilson revived his career in Pittsburgh, notching 16 touchdowns in 11 games as he steered the Steelers into the playoffs.

Looking ahead, the Giants will also leverage their No. 3 overall pick in next month’s NFL draft. Prospects such as Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders could pique their interest for further strengthening the quarterback position.

Local hero Tommy DeVito, hailing from New Jersey, will continue providing essential support among the Giants’ quarterback cadre. He stepped in for injured teammates Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor in his debut season, achieving an unprecedented feat for an undrafted rookie by maintaining a passer rating above 100 across three consecutive games. Despite limited action last season due to injuries, DeVito has accumulated eight touchdown passes versus three interceptions over 12 games.

In addition to retaining DeVito, New York has committed to other strategic roster moves before free agency. The team re-signed long snapper Casey Kreiter and linebacker Tomon Fox. They have also reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with punter Jamie Gillan, strengthening their special teams lineup.
