In Leverkusen, Germany, Bayer Leverkusen is grappling with concerns over the health of three pivotal players ahead of their upcoming Champions League face-off with Bayern Munich scheduled for Tuesday.
Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, and Edmond Tapsoba were each substituted early during Leverkusen’s 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The club is particularly anxious about Wirtz, who sustained an injury to his right foot after being introduced as a substitute at halftime.
Xabi Alonso, the coach for Leverkusen, shared that Wirtz was en route to the hospital even before the conclusion of the match. He further explained that both Xhaka and Tapsoba were taken off at halftime due to their struggles during the game. Alonso remarked, “We don’t know yet if they’re injured or they just have knocks. Granit and Edi had a few problems, that’s why we took them off. We have to wait and see.”
Leverkusen faces the uphill task of overcoming a three-goal disadvantage against Bayern this Tuesday, following a defeat in the first leg of their last 16 tie in Munich held last Wednesday.
