CAGLIARI, Italy — In a tightly contested Serie A match on Friday, Cagliari and Genoa played out a 1-1 draw that left both teams sharing the spoils.
Cagliari entered the game with recent defeats at the hands of Bologna and Juventus, having scored just four goals in their previous six league matches.
Despite the lackluster form, Cagliari managed to gain the upper hand in the 18th minute. Nicolas Viola, receiving a well-placed pass from teammate Roberto Piccoli, calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give the home side the lead.
However, Genoa responded swiftly in the second half. Maxwel Cornet, who is on loan from West Ham, found the back of the net just two minutes after the restart with a precise finish, marking his second goal in four appearances for Genoa.
With this result, Genoa holds the 12th position in the league standings, while Cagliari sits in 15th place. Importantly for Cagliari, they maintain a four-point cushion above the relegation zone, providing some security as the season progresses.
