Syracuse Crunch’s forward Maxim Groshev has been handed a 10-game suspension by the American Hockey League as a consequence of using what they described as “racially insensitive language” during a game. The incident took place in a match against Rochester on the preceding Saturday.
Groshev, who has already missed one game following the incident, will be eligible for a return on March 30. However, if he participates in the NHL’s Player Inclusion Coalition and demonstrates adequate progress in the associated training program, he may appeal the remaining part of his suspension after serving eight games. The determination of sufficient progress will be made by AHL President and CEO Scott Howson.
The American Hockey League emphasized their commitment to fostering an environment that is safe and inclusive, free from any sort of abuse, harassment, or unethical conduct. The league stressed that individual inclusion education is an integral part of enhancing the cultural environment throughout the league.
Maxim Groshev was picked by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round of the 2020 draft, marking this as his second stint with the Lightning’s principal minor-league team. This season, he has contributed with five goals and six assists over the span of 46 games. In the previous season, he accumulated 10 goals and 20 assists across 67 games.
Although drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Groshev is yet to feature in a regular-season game for the NHL side.
