NEW DELHI — Celebrated striker Sunil Chhetri has decided to emerge from retirement at the age of 40 to aid India’s mission in securing a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup. This week, Chhetri was called back to the national team for the crucial match against Bangladesh scheduled for March 25.

Chhetri holds an impressive position as the third-highest goal-scorer among currently active international players, with 94 goals. This places him right behind illustrious names like Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the top spot with 135 goals, and Lionel Messi with 112.

“Securing qualification for the Asian Cup is of immense importance to us,” expressed India’s coach, Manolo Marquez. “Acknowledging the significance of the upcoming tournament and matches, I had a conversation with Sunil Chhetri regarding a return to the national team to bolster our chances. He was agreeable, and thus he has been reintegrated into the squad.”

Chhetri has been displaying excellent form in the Indian Super League, achieving 12 goals during the regular season, leading Bengaluru FC into the championship playoffs.

In contrast, India’s national team has faced challenges, having not secured a victory in its last 12 matches. Despite this, the Blue Tigers have previously qualified for three out of the last four Asian Cups and aim to rebound before facing Bangladesh by engaging in a preparatory match against the Maldives on March 19.

India’s path in Group C also involves upcoming encounters against Hong Kong and Singapore. To ensure passage to the 2027 tournament in Saudi Arabia, India must finish as the top team in the group.
