The Cleveland Browns have once again adjusted Deshaun Watson’s contract in an effort to create salary cap space as the new league year approaches. According to an insider, this recent restructuring will free up nearly $36 million for the team. The information was revealed under anonymity as the Browns have yet to officially announce this change.
Originally reported by ESPN, the Browns found themselves nearly $22 million over the cap before deciding to modify Watson’s contract. This marks the second time in three months that his contract has been restructured. Back in December, the team and Watson agreed to add void years extending through 2030. This tactic allows the Browns to spread out the contract’s dead money, instead of shouldering a substantial amount in a single season.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old quarterback might be out for the entire 2025 season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, an injury he sustained for the second time in January this year. Watson first injured his Achilles during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on October 20, and the Browns have an insurance policy that offers protection on the contract, potentially granting cap relief if he cannot play next season.
Since being acquired from the Houston Texans in 2022, Watson has only appeared in 19 games for the Browns, despite signing a fully guaranteed deal worth $230 million. His on-field presence has been limited due to various setbacks: an 11-game suspension in 2022, a shoulder injury curtailing his 2023 season after just six games, and the recent Achilles injury which has currently sidelined him.
Suffering a harsh 3-14 season in 2024, Cleveland now holds the second overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft in April. The team recently hosted quarterback prospects Shedeur Sanders from Colorado and Cam Ward from Miami for visits. In addition to evaluating draft options, the Browns are also anticipated to sign a veteran quarterback with free agency opening soon.
