PORTLAND, Ore. — Forward Sophia Wilson, a member of both the Portland Thorns and the U.S. women’s national soccer team, has revealed that she is expecting a baby. Wilson, who was known by her maiden name Smith before her marriage, shared the joyous news on Instagram with an image showing her holding sonogram photos while her husband, Michael Wilson, embraces her. Michael is a wide receiver for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. Her caption read, “Life just keeps getting sweeter.”
Sophia Wilson, 24, was a key player in the U.S. national team’s triumph at the Paris Olympics last summer. The dynamic trio of Wilson, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson has been affectionately dubbed “Triple Espresso” by their fans. Wilson’s exceptional skills on the field were also showcased during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, having played in 58 national matches and scored 24 goals. She received the prestigious U.S. Soccer Women’s Player of the Year award in 2022 and was previously acknowledged as the Young Player of the Year in 2017.
Wilson’s soccer journey began prominently when she was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2020 National Women’s Soccer League draft, following her instrumental role in Stanford University’s victory over North Carolina in the 2019 NCAA College Cup championship. Her remarkable performance included netting three goals in the semifinal win against UCLA, earning her the title of College Cup’s Most Valuable Player.
Throughout her five seasons with the Portland Thorns, Wilson has been a prolific scorer, claiming 44 goals in all competitions. Her outstanding contributions to the team led to her being honored as the NWSL’s Most Valuable Player in 2022, after she played a crucial part in securing the league title for Portland.
Portland Thorns expressed their excitement on social media, stating, “We are overjoyed to share that @sophiawilson and her husband Michael are expecting their first child! The Thorns are proud to support her through this incredible new chapter.”
Looking ahead, the Thorns are set to commence their 2025 season on March 15 with a match against the Kansas City Current.
