BLACKSBURG, Va. — Ven-Allen Lubin achieved his inaugural double-double as a member of the Tar Heels, and Ian Jackson sank five of North Carolina’s season-best 15 three-point shots, contributing 19 points to a decisive 91-59 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday night.
The Tar Heels, boasting a 20-11 overall record and 13-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), extended their current streak to six consecutive victories as they gear up to face second-ranked Duke in their final regular-season game this Saturday. This milestone marks North Carolina’s 65th season with at least 20 wins.
Lubin, who has previously played at Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, added 10 points alongside 11 rebounds. Jackson netted 5 out of 8 attempts from beyond the arc. Other significant contributors included Seth Trimble with 17 points, RJ Davis with 15, and Drake Powell with 13. Elliot Cadeau stood out with 12 assists.
The Tar Heels connected on 15 of their 28 three-point attempts while shooting an impressive 59% from the field.
For the Hokies, Jaydon Young and Ben Burnham each scored 12 points. Virginia Tech, with a 13-17 record and 8-11 in the ACC, managed 38% shooting from the field. The absence of Tobi Lawal, the team’s top scorer and rebounder, due to a lower leg injury, was felt throughout the game. Lawal also missed their previous matchup.
Initially, the Hokies led by two points before North Carolina embarked on a 25-6 scoring spree in the last seven minutes of the first half. The run culminated with a dunk from Trimble, assisted by Lubin, wrapping up the half with a score of 46-29. During this period, Davis contributed nine of his total 15 first-half points, while Trimble added seven from his 12.
Jackson’s consecutive 3-pointers triggered a 15-0 run, resulting in a 34-point lead with 12 minutes left in the game.
Anticipating their face-off against the Blue Devils, North Carolina seeks redemption following their 87-70 defeat to Duke on February 1 at Duke’s home court. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is set to play No. 11 Clemson this Saturday.
