JUPITER, Fla. — The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that their left-handed pitcher, Zack Thompson, is dealing with a latissimus dorsi muscle strain, commonly referred to as a lat strain. As a result, the team has decided to sideline him for an estimated period of three to four weeks.

The team’s president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, shared the news with reporters, including details described as a Grade 1 strain, on Sunday. This type of strain is considered mild, but the recovery process must still be carefully monitored. Mozeliak emphasized that Thompson would undergo a re-evaluation at the conclusion of the prescribed rest period to assess his progress and readiness to return.

Thompson’s performance last season included a record of 0-2, coupled with a 9.53 ERA over five games while playing for St. Louis. Despite these struggles, he was also able to contribute this spring, participating briefly by pitching a scoreless inning, although he issued one walk during that appearance on Monday.

At 27 years of age, Thompson has accumulated a record of 6-10 and maintains a 4.50 ERA throughout his 52 appearances in Major League Baseball since starting his professional career three years ago.
