Memphis defeats UAB 88-81; Haggerty, Rogers lead the way

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — PJ Haggerty was instrumental in helping No. 18 Memphis overcome a daunting 11-point deficit by scoring 17 of his game-high 25 points in the last 12 minutes, leading to an 88-81 victory over UAB on Sunday. The victory puts Memphis closer to claiming the regular-season title in the American Athletic Conference.

    Colby Rogers was key for the Tigers (24-5, 14-2) as he nailed five 3-pointers and ended the game with 21 points. Dain Dainja also shone with a robust performance, contributing 16 points and grabbing a career-best 17 rebounds, while Tyrese Hunter added 13 points to bolster the team’s offensive strength.

    The game took a pivotal turn when Rogers connected a 3-pointer to make it 48-47, handing Memphis its first lead since the initial score of 6-5, just under three minutes into the second half.

    Ja’Borri McGhee spearheaded the Blazers (19-10, 12-4) with 22 points, while Christian Coleman chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. Bradley Ezewiro and Yaxel Lendeborg also made solid contributions with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

    If Wichita State manages to defeat North Texas on Monday, Memphis will secure at least a portion of the AAC title. Historically, the Tigers have dominated this matchup, holding a 42-12 series lead, with 15 of those victories occurring on UAB’s home court.

    In the first half, Memphis struggled with numerous errors, committing nine turnovers. However, the Tigers regrouped to dominate the second half, showcasing a blend of efficient offense and staunch defense.

    UAB demonstrated their potential as formidable contenders for the upcoming conference tournament, which will commence on March 12. They have proven capable of providing stiff competition.

    A critical moment in the game came when Nicholas Jourdain was fouled after executing a forceful two-handed putback dunk following a missed shot by Dainja. His successful free throw extended Memphis’ lead to 82-74 with just two minutes remaining.

    Memphis improved its shooting dramatically after halftime, going from hitting 14 of 35 shots in the first half to a sizzling 67% success rate (22 of 33) in the second half.

    The upcoming fixtures will see Memphis traveling to take on UTSA on Tuesday, while UAB will host Florida Atlantic on Thursday.
