Diggins Drives UMass Past Rhode Island 91-88

    AMHERST, Mass. — Rahsool Diggins was the standout player for UMass as he scored a game-high 29 points, helping the Minutemen secure a thrilling 91-88 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday. His critical jump shot with just 50 seconds remaining in the game sealed the deal for UMass.

    In addition to his impressive scoring performance, Diggins contributed six assists and three steals, enhancing his all-around game for the Minutemen, who now hold a record of 12-17 and stand 7-9 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Jaylen Curry also had a notable game, adding 22 points and eight assists. Daniel Hankins-Sanford was efficient on the court, making 7 of his 14 field goal attempts, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc, and went 3 for 4 from the free-throw line to close out with 19 points.

    The Rams, now at 17-11 and 6-10 in conference play, were driven by David Green’s remarkable performance, as he logged 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jamarques Lawrence supported the effort with 18 points, while Sebastian Thomas chipped in with 17 points and nine assists for Rhode Island.

    In the first half, Curry was pivotal, scoring 14 points, though UMass went into halftime trailing 56-47. The second half saw Diggins rise to the occasion, leading the team with 17 points and making the crucial winning shot in the final minute of the game.

    Looking ahead, both teams are preparing for their upcoming Wednesday matchups. UMass will be traveling to face Saint Bonaventure, while Rhode Island is set to compete against Saint Joseph’s (PA).
