WACO, Texas — There was a gentle buzz among Sedona Prince’s teammates at TCU when she brought up her past admiration for Baylor, a team with 13 Big 12 championships that the Horned Frogs, currently ranked 10th, aim to defeat to secure their first title. Prince reminisced on her days watching Brittney Griner and expressed how special it felt during a press conference alongside Hailey Van Lith and Madison Conner after a decisive senior day victory over Houston.
The TCU Horned Frogs (27-3, 15-2 Big 12) have had an impressive undefeated run at home, boasting a perfect 19-0 record, which could give them a favorable starting position in the upcoming women’s NCAA Tournament. This streak includes a historic win against Baylor after a 35-year drought since they last triumphed over them when both were part of the now-defunct Southwest Conference.
They are set to face off against 17th-ranked Baylor (25-5, 15-2) on Sunday, with the Big 12 title hanging in the balance. This showdown marks the first instance in the league’s 29-year history of a title-deciding game on the final day of regular play, set to unfold in the last of 144 conference matchups.
“It’s going to be an exhilarating game,” Conner remarked, leading nationally in 3-pointers with 106. “This is for the league title, against a rival on their senior night, which will surely heighten emotions. We’re ready to get in there, take care of business, and repeat our victory on their home turf. It’s sure to be intense.”
Baylor has been on a winning spree, taking nine consecutive games since their close 80-75 loss at TCU on January 26, positioning themselves for this finale.
“Big 12, you’re welcome. TCU did a fantastic job setting up this huge match,” praised fourth-year Baylor coach Nicki Collen. “This is a significant game for the league and both teams. Standing at the forefront of a shared goal, it promises to be eventful.”
Mark Campbell, TCU’s coach since last year, agrees. “This is quintessential March Madness,” he stated. “Back in June, our team sat down to establish our objectives: winning a league title and earning a spot to host by securing a top 16 seed topped the list. It’s amazing.”
Currently, TCU is riding a six-game winning streak, having set new school records for both overall and conference victories. Not since their 2010 Mountain West title season have they seen this level of success, with significant wins over No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 9 NC State, adding to their triumph over their staunch instate competitor.
During their last meet-up against Baylor, Prince, Van Lith, and Conner collectively scored 64 points and have consistently managed to surpass 60 points together in seven other games.
Baylor’s senior guard, Sarah Andrews, having participated in a Big 12-record 162 games, experienced league titles with the Lady Bears in her initial two years with them in 2021 and 2022. She’s keen to secure another on her senior night.
“This moment will be bittersweet—I’ll miss this,” Andrews reflected, recalling her winning seasons through Snapchat memories. “But when the confetti starts raining down, it’ll all feel worth it. TCU has the rankings and thus a bulk of the pressure. We’re stepping in as underdogs.”
With history, emotions, and the championship title at stake, the stage is set for a thrilling climax to the Big 12 season.
