In an update on U.S. Soccer Federation salaries and financial dealings, former U.S. women’s soccer coach Vlatko Andonovski received $454,048 during his last nine months on the job, surpassing the earnings of Gregg Berhalter, who made $376,214 in the initial nine months of his second tenure as the men’s coach. These salary details emerged from the federation’s tax return for the fiscal year concluding on March 31, 2024.
Andonovski, who announced his resignation in August 2023 following the U.S. team’s early exit in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup, had a base salary of $411,471. This amount was greater than Berhalter’s $346,452 base pay. The total compensation figures also incorporated deferred payments and non-taxable benefits. Andonovski’s remuneration details indicated he was compensated through December 2023.
Although Berhalter’s contract ended in 2022, he was reinstated in June 2023 after an investigation cleared him of concealing information during his initial hiring phase. This investigation came after the Reyna family brought up a decades-old domestic violence claim concerning Berhalter and his now-wife. However, Berhalter was dismissed in July following his squad’s early exit from the Copa America and was succeeded by Mauricio Pochettino.
The federation appointed Emma Hayes as the women’s coach in November 2023, with her official start the following May. Under her leadership, the U.S. team secured its fifth Olympic gold medal in summer 2024.
CEO JT Batson, who took on the role in September 2022, earned $831,890. This sum included a base salary of $609,308 and a $155,932 bonus. Hank Steinbrecher, who served as the organization’s secretary general from 1990 to 2000, was reported to have earned $940,848 for the fiscal year. Meanwhile, Dan Flynn, Steinbrecher’s successor and a continuing USSF ambassador whose CEO term concluded in 2019, was listed at $1,558,494.
March 2023 saw Matt Crocker appointed as sporting director, starting in August, earning $430,484, which comprised a $328,401 base pay and $80,000 in bonuses and relocation payments.
Kate Markgraf, former defender and women’s national team general manager, departed in August 2023, earning $361,265, predominantly from a $341,465 base salary. Leading players like goalkeeper Matt Turner earned $524,696, with midfielders Yunus Musah and Brenden Aaronson, along with defenders Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest, all featuring on the salary list with substantial earnings.
In terms of financial transactions, the U.S. Soccer Federation paid Soccer United Marketing $4,160,161 for sponsorship agreements and $3,123,211 to law firm Lathan & Watkins. For the fiscal year, revenue increased to $196.8 million, compared to $149.2 million in the previous period, while expenses rose to $190.9 million from $187.2 million.
