In Sydney, widespread criticism has emerged following inappropriate and misogynistic remarks made by a radio host concerning the Matildas, Australia’s national women’s soccer team. The offending comments were aired on Triple M, delivered by comedian and host Marty Sheargold. The Matildas, who recently faced defeats against Japan and the U.S. in the SheBelieves Cup, were subjected to a peculiar and offensive tirade during Sheargold’s program.
Sheargold made disparaging remarks, comparing the players to high school students entangled in “infighting and friendship issues,” and questioned if his co-hosts had any “men’s sports” to discuss. He bizarrely added, “There’s something wrong with the Matildas,” reflecting on their participation in the 2023 World Cup where they reached the semifinals at home.
Rosie Malone, a former Australian field hockey player, edited and shared Sheargold’s comments on social media, labeling them as “disgusting” and “horrendous.” Malone expressed her disbelief that such remarks could still air in 2025, worrying about the negative impact on young girls listening in their cars.
In solidarity, Matildas players like Alex Chidiac and Clare Wheeler voiced their disdain on Instagram. Chidiac expressed weariness over such commentary, while Wheeler reaffirmed that “sport is for everyone and these views are for no one.”
Football Federation Australia issued a statement condemning the remarks, highlighting how they belittle the remarkable achievements of the national team. The federation emphasized the Matildas’ role in inspiring future generations and transforming women’s sport in Australia, insisting they deserve respectful coverage.
Australia’s sports minister, Anika Wells, criticized the comments as “boorish, boring, wrong,” urging that ignorance like this should not go unchecked. Beau Busch, CEO of Professional Footballers Australia, denounced the remarks as “disgusting, pathetic and deeply misogynistic,” underlining their disrespect for women’s sport.
In response to the backlash, the Triple M network distanced itself from the comments, stating they do not reflect the station’s views and values. Marty Sheargold issued an apology, acknowledging that while his comedy can sometimes miss the mark, he understands why his comments caused offense, and he offered a sincere apology.
