DORTMUND, Germany — On Saturday, Serhou Guirassy made a remarkable impact for Borussia Dortmund as he became the first player since Erling Haaland to net four goals in a single match, leading his team to a dominating 6-0 victory against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
“Scoring four goals, achieving victory, and having amazing fans—it’s truly special,” Guirassy expressed in a post-match interview with Sky. “I believe it’s my first time ever achieving this feat. While I’m incredibly happy, the most important thing is always the team and the win.”
Haaland’s last four-goal performance for Dortmund occurred in a 5-2 triumph against Hertha Berlin back in November 2020. Coach Niko Kova? showered Guirassy with praise, calling his display “world-class.” He also highlighted the contributions of midfielder Pascal Gross, who assisted in creating four of the goals scored during the match.
Prior to facing Union Berlin, Guirassy had managed just nine goals in 19 league appearances this season, falling short of the impressive tally of 28 goals he achieved in 28 Bundesliga matches while playing for Stuttgart the previous season.
Over two seasons at Stuttgart, Guirassy accumulated a total of 44 goals in 58 matches after his transfer from the French club Rennes in 2022. He joined Dortmund as part of a signing wave from Bundesliga runner-up Stuttgart last summer, alongside German defender Waldemar Anton. However, both players initially struggled to find their footing as Dortmund stumbled through the early part of the season.
In January, Dortmund made the decision to part ways with coach Nuri Sahin, bringing in Kova?, known for his previous managerial success with Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich. Unfortunately, Kova? faced challenges himself, overseeing two consecutive defeats in his first Bundesliga games before the team started to show promise.
Dortmund’s Champions League performances gave a glimpse of the team’s potential. They secured a solid 3-0 victory against Sporting Lisbon and followed that with a 0-0 draw, ensuring their progression to the last 16. In the Lisbon games, Guirassy distinguished himself by scoring a goal and providing an assist; he now holds 10 goals and five assists in this Champions League campaign.
During his successful stint at Stuttgart, Guirassy flourished in a striking partnership with German forward Deniz Undav, yet he has found himself more isolated with Dortmund. The match against Union Berlin saw him benefit from the rare opportunity for Gio Reyna, who made just his second league start of the season under Kova?’s management.
Looking ahead, Dortmund will face Lille, a French club, in the Champions League, carrying confidence into the match largely due to Guirassy’s recent performance. “Every great journey begins from a single day and today was extraordinary,” Guirassy remarked. “I am optimistic that we can build upon this success.”
