PHILADELPHIA — In an impressive display, Eric Dixon scored 23 points, while Jhamir Brickus contributed 21 points, including 15 in a commanding first-half performance, leading Villanova to a convincing 81-66 victory over No. 16 Marquette on Friday evening.

Jordan Dumont also made significant contributions with 15 points, aiding Villanova (16-12, 9-8 Big East) in breaking a two-game losing streak overall and finally overcoming Marquette (20-7, 11-5), from whom they had suffered eight consecutive losses. This season, the Wildcats have defeated formidable Big East teams such as St. John’s, UConn, and Marquette at home.

Despite the loss, Zaide Lowery stood out for Marquette, scoring 25 points. The Golden Eagles are facing challenges, having lost four of their last six games.

Villanova showcased an exceptional performance in the first half, establishing a 46-33 lead by the break. However, they had previously had a similar strong showing against UConn just days prior, where they squandered a 14-point lead in the final minutes of the game. In that encounter, UConn remarkably tallied 27 of the last 33 points.

This time, the Wildcats maintained their momentum into the second half against Marquette, as the Golden Eagles were unable to shrink the deficit to single digits after halftime.

Takeaways:

For Marquette, while the team is still in contention for an NCAA at-large bid, their recent performance has diminished their footing. Upcoming matches against UConn and a home game against St. John’s will be crucial for the Golden Eagles to recapture their winning form.

On the other hand, Villanova remains within striking distance of fifth-place Xavier, which currently holds a slight half-game lead over them. Securing a position in the top five of the conference is vital as it guarantees first-round byes in the upcoming conference tournament.

Key moment:

The first half was crucial for Villanova, who at one point held a 19-point advantage. Brickus was particularly impressive, sinking all five of his three-point attempts, while the Wildcats shot an astonishing 80% from beyond the arc during that period.

Key stat:

Villanova excelled in their three-point shooting, successfully making 15 of 26 attempts from long range.

Up next:

Marquette will be hosting Providence on Tuesday night, while Villanova will visit Seton Hall on Wednesday night.
