ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Just hours before the rivalry game between the No. 14 Michigan State Spartans and the 12th-ranked Michigan Wolverines, the university announced a significant multiyear contract extension for head coach Dusty May. The game ultimately saw Michigan State coming out on top, defeating the Wolverines 75-62.

Dusty May made history as the initial head coach in Michigan’s basketball program to secure victories in his first 13 home matchups. However, that winning streak came to an end with the loss to the Spartans, resulting in the Wolverines losing their lead in the Big Ten standings.

The former assistant to famed coach Bob Knight expressed his satisfaction with his position at Michigan, firmly stating that he is not pursuing the head coaching role at Indiana, where current coach Mike Woodson has announced his plans to step down after the current season. “His dedication to this university and the thriving men’s basketball program has far surpassed our expectations and fills us all with anticipation for what the future brings,” said athletic director Warde Manuel.

In his inaugural season with Michigan, May has achieved a milestone, leading the team to 20 wins—a notable accomplishment that hasn’t been achieved in the last four years. He was appointed approximately 11 months ago following the dismissal of Juwan Howard, inheriting a team that had suffered a record-setting 24 losses the previous year, placing them at the bottom of the Big Ten for the first time since 1961.

Prior to joining Michigan, May had a successful tenure at Florida Atlantic University, where he amassed a record of 126 wins against 69 losses over a six-year period. He notably guided the team to an impressive 35-4 season and a trip to the Final Four in 2023, making him a sought-after coach.

This season, May’s roster includes seven transfers and four freshmen. Despite initial low expectations, he has already managed to surpass those benchmarks at Michigan, indicating a promising trajectory for the basketball program’s future.
