INDIANAPOLIS — Coach Shane Steichen of the Indianapolis Colts announced the hiring of three new coaching assistants on Friday. This includes James Bettcher, who will take on the role of linebackers coach, Jerome Henderson as the defensive backs coach, and Chris Hewitt, who will serve as the passing game coordinator for the secondary.
Additionally, the Colts confirmed the return of last season’s coaching fellows: Isabel Diaz, Kalon Humphries, and Diego Ortiz will all remain in their positions for the upcoming season. There is an intention to reveal one more coaching fellow soon.
In a further move, Leigh Hullett has been promoted to the position of director of performance nutrition.
Bettcher brings with him an impressive 21 years of coaching experience. He previously worked as a special assistant to former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano in 2012. Most recently, he served as the linebackers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals for the last three seasons, working alongside the Colts’ new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
Jerome Henderson has a two-decade background in NFL coaching and spent the last five seasons focusing on the secondary with the New York Giants. As a former player, he appeared in two Super Bowls after being chosen in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots.
Chris Hewitt has dedicated all of his 13 seasons in the NFL to the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent the last five seasons as a passing game coordinator.
As for the coaching fellows, Diaz will continue her role with the Colts’ special teams, Humphries will remain focused on the team’s defensive strategy, and Ortiz will keep working with the offense.
Hullett just finished her third season serving as the team’s dietitian, enhancing the nutritional framework for players.
