Yankees and Player Transformation

Transformation of Players’ Looks with the Yankees

TAMPA, Fla. — Here is how the appearance of various players has evolved after they became members of the New York Yankees:

Reggie Jackson, who played for the Oakland Athletics from 1968 until 1975, was known for sporting a beard during his time with the team. The A’s were affectionately dubbed the Mustache Gang due to the encouragement of their owner Charles O. Finley. Jackson joined the Yankees before the 1977 season, marking a new chapter in his career.

Randy Johnson became a Yankee after being traded from Seattle prior to the 2005 season. He arrived at spring training sporting a significantly tidier appearance, having cut his shoulder-length hair and shaved his face. Owner George Steinbrenner acknowledged his polished look, remarking, “Glad you’re here. Glad you’re cleaned up, and glad you’re here.”

Long-haired and bearded, Johnny Damon was a key figure in the Boston Red Sox’s triumph in the 2004 World Series. However, during his tenure with the Yankees from 2006 to 2008, he opted for a strikingly different look, leaving behind his signature long hair. Although he didn’t grow it back after moving on from New York, he occasionally maintained a short beard during his final three years in the major leagues.

Jason Giambi, known for his facial hair while playing for the A’s from 1995 to 2001, adopted a clean-shaven look during his period with the Yankees. However, upon rejoining Oakland in 2009, he decided to regrow his goatee and beard.

When Andrew McCutchen joined the Yankees on August 21, 2018, he made a significant change by shaving off his beard. His young son observed the transformation closely and seemed to adjust well to his father’s new appearance, touching his father’s face for several minutes afterward.

Gerrit Cole had long hair and a beard during his time with the Houston Astros but adopted a clean-cut style after signing with the Yankees for the 2020 season. Initially, his hair was long enough to curl behind his neck, yet by 2024 and into the current season, it has been styled shorter.
