STOCKHOLM — Swedish officials are currently looking into a damaged undersea cable discovered in the Baltic Sea, as reported by Swedish news outlet TT.
This incident is part of a concerning trend, with multiple recent occurrences of compromised undersea cables fueling suspicions of potential Russian interference and espionage activities in the area.
Just last month, authorities identified damage on an undersea fiber-optic cable connecting the Latvian city of Ventspils to Sweden’s Gotland. A ship belonging to a Bulgarian firm was detained but released afterward when Swedish prosecutors cleared it of initial sabotage allegations regarding the damage.
The latest breakage was detected near Gotland, located south of Stockholm, specifically within the Swedish economic zone, as reported by TT on Friday. This particular cable facilitates communication between Germany and Finland.
In response to the incident, the Coast Guard is currently engaged at the site. The Coast Guard, alongside prosecutors, has directed media inquiries to police authorities, although there has been no immediate response to those requests for information.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed on the social media platform X on Friday that the government takes all reports concerning damage to Baltic Sea infrastructure extremely seriously.
No further information has been provided at this time.
