ST. GEORGE, Utah — In a thrilling overtime finish, Tanner Toolson netted 24 points, including a decisive jumper with just 26 seconds remaining, leading Utah Valley to a narrow 79-77 victory over Utah Tech on Thursday night.
After Toolson’s critical shot, Utah Tech had the opportunity to respond but failed to convert a contested jumper and a subsequent 3-point attempt, sealing their fate. Earlier in the game, Jackson Holcombe’s layup for Utah Valley with 39 seconds left in regulation tied the contest at 68, sending the matchup into overtime.
Toolson showcased an impressive performance, shooting 8 of 16 overall, which included 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, while also going perfect from the free-throw line with three successful attempts. Supporting him, Carter Welling contributed significantly with 16 points, alongside eight rebounds and three blocks. Dominick Nelson and Holcombe added further to the scoring effort with 11 and 9 points, respectively.
On the other side, Noa Gonsalves emerged as the top performer for the Trailblazers (6-20, 2-9), scoring 18 points and recording three blocks. Beon Riley had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Stone Hutchings contributed 14 points and two steals. Unfortunately for Utah Tech, this defeat marks their ninth consecutive loss.
Looking ahead, both teams are scheduled to compete again on Saturday. Utah Valley will welcome Seattle, while Utah Tech will travel to face Abilene Christian.
