Johnson tallies 18 points as Tennessee Tech defeats UT Martin 71-66 in overtime

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Rodney Johnson Jr. delivered an impressive performance, scoring 18 points in a thrilling 71-66 overtime victory for Tennessee Tech against UT Martin on Thursday night.

In addition to his points, Johnson contributed nine rebounds and three steals to help the Golden Eagles improve to a 14-14 overall record, including 9-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Fellow teammate Jaylon Johnson also made an impact with 16 points, although he struggled with his shooting, hitting only 3 of 10 attempts from the field and 1 of 7 from beyond the arc. Nonetheless, he was effective at the free-throw line, converting 9 of 10 attempts, while also adding seven rebounds and four steals to the team’s efforts. Matthew Sells chipped in with 12 points, showcasing his shooting skill by going 4 of 6 from three-point range, along with six rebounds.

For the Skyhawks, Tarence Guinyard was the standout player, finishing the game with a remarkable 26 points alongside 12 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. AJ Hopkins supported the effort with 16 points and six rebounds. Vladimer Salaridze contributed to the team’s performance with six points, six rebounds, and three steals.

The game reached overtime after UTM’s Josue Grullon drained a crucial three-pointer with just one second remaining in regulation, sending the contest into an extra period.

Looking ahead, Tennessee Tech will take on Tennessee State in a home game on Saturday, while UT Martin will be facing Southern Indiana in their next match on Thursday.
