BATON ROUGE, La. — On Thursday night, No. 7 LSU showcased their strength with a commanding 79-63 victory over Georgia, led by Flau’Jae Johnson who contributed significantly to the win with 21 points, including an impressive three-pointer from almost 40 feet away.
Jersey Wolfenbarger also made her mark by scoring 16 points and collecting 12 rebounds, while Kailyn Gilbert added another 15 points for the Tigers (26-2, 11-2 SEC). The team was able to bounce back confidently after a loss to No. 2 Texas just last weekend, despite playing without their key player, All-America power forward Aneesah Morrow.
Georgia’s Trinity Turner had a standout performance, leading all scorers with 28 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs (10-17, 2-11) faced their ninth defeat in the last ten games. Supporting Turner were Mia Woolfolk with 12 points and Asia Avinger contributing 10 points, although the Bulldogs struggled significantly with 17 turnovers which LSU capitalized on, scoring 20 points off those mistakes.
For LSU, Mikaylah Williams scored 12 points, while Sa’Myah Smith added 11 points along with 12 rebounds, helping ensure the Tigers dominated the paint against their opponents.
A key observation for Georgia was their reliance on freshmen players, who accounted for 47% of their scoring heading into the game, a statistic that increased with freshmen contributing 42 of the total points during the match against LSU.
Meanwhile, Morrow, averaging 18.1 points and 14.4 rebounds prior to this game, was sidelined due to soreness in her foot after an incident last Sunday against Texas. Coach Kim Mulkey stated that there was no structural damage, and although it was Morrow’s first missed game of the season, expectations were for her to return soon.
A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Johnson hit a long-range three-pointer just before the end of the third quarter, extending LSU’s lead to 58-45. Following that shot, Georgia struggled to mount a comeback and fell behind by as many as 20 points in the fourth.
Despite the absence of Morrow, LSU maintained strong control on the boards, recording 19 offensive rebounds which resulted in 21 second-chance points, compared to Georgia’s 11.
Looking ahead, Georgia will host No. 2 Texas on Monday night, while LSU is set to compete against No. 14 Kentucky on Sunday.
