BATON ROUGE, La. — Flau’Jae Johnson delivered an impressive performance for No. 7 LSU, sinking three 3-pointers, including one shot from nearly 40 feet, and tallying a total of 21 points in the Tigers’ commanding 79-63 victory over Georgia on Thursday night.
Jersey Wolfenbarger contributed significantly with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Kailyn Gilbert added 15 points to the scoreboard for LSU (26-2, 11-2 SEC). The Tigers, playing without star power forward Aneesah Morrow, displayed resilience by bouncing back from a recent loss to No. 2 Texas.
On the opposing side, Trinity Turner led Georgia (10-17, 2-11) with a staggering 28 points. This defeat marked the Bulldogs’ ninth loss in their last ten games. Mia Woolfolk and Asia Avinger also made contributions with 12 and 10 points, respectively, but Georgia struggled significantly with 17 turnovers, which LSU capitalized on, converting those miscues into 20 points.
Additionally, Mikaylah Williams and Sa’Myah Smith made their mark for LSU, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Smith also pulled down 12 rebounds.
**Key Observations**
For Georgia, the reliance on their freshman players has been apparent, with newcomers contributing to 47% of their scoring prior to the matchup. This trend only intensified against LSU, as freshmen accounted for 42 of Georgia’s total points.
On the LSU side, Morrow, who has been a standout this season with averages of 18.1 points and 14.4 rebounds, was absent due to a foot injury sustained in the previous game at Texas. While she experienced some soreness, coach Kim Mulkey indicated that there were no structural issues and expected her to return to play following this game.
**Decisive Moment**
A standout moment came when Johnson hit a deep 3-pointer as the third quarter came to a close, extending LSU’s lead to 58-45. Following this shot, Georgia struggled to regain momentum, ultimately trailing by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
**Notable Statistic**
Despite Morrow’s absence, LSU dominated the offensive boards, securing 19 offensive rebounds and turning those into 21 second-chance points compared to Georgia’s 11.
**Next Up**
Looking ahead, Georgia will host No. 2 Texas on Monday night, while LSU is set to face No. 14 Kentucky on Sunday.
