A series of explosions erupted on three parked buses in central Israel on Thursday, sparking concerns that it might be a militant attack. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The detonations coincided with a somber day in Israel as the bodies of four hostages from Gaza were returned by Hamas, part of a ceasefire arrangement. The incidents recall the bombings that occurred during the Palestinian uprising of the early 2000s, although such attacks have become increasingly rare in recent years.

Israeli police reported the discovery of explosives on two additional buses, which fortunately did not go off. Police spokesperson Asi Aharoni confirmed to Channel 13 TV that the five bombs were similar in design and fitted with timers. Squads trained in bomb disposal are currently working to disarm the unexploded devices.

At the scene, law enforcement personnel dressed in protective suits were seen searching for clues amid the charred remnants of the buses, which had been parked in Bat Yam, a city located near Tel Aviv.

The mayor of Bat Yam, Tzvika Brot, expressed his amazement that no one was injured during the incidents, noting that the buses were parked after completing their service for the day.

Ofir Karni, the head of the bus company involved, indicated that all drivers were instructed to halt operations and conduct thorough inspections of the buses. Services resumed once the buses were deemed secure.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is being kept informed about the situation through his military secretary. Police have indicated that the Shin Bet internal security agency will spearhead the investigation.

Police spokesman Haim Sargrof emphasized the need to identify whether a single individual planted explosives on multiple buses or if it was the work of several people. He noted that the type of explosives involved matched those previously discovered in the West Bank, but did not provide further details.

Israel’s military has engaged in numerous operations targeting suspected Palestinian militants in the West Bank since the outbreak of conflict following a Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. In light of the ongoing military actions, entry into Israel for Palestinians from the occupied territories has been greatly restricted.

A group claiming to be affiliated with Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, posted a message on Telegram asserting their continued pursuit of revenge against the Israeli occupation without explicitly taking responsibility for the bus attacks.

Tulkarem, along with two associated refugee camps, has been a critical area of focus in Israel’s military efforts in the West Bank since a ceasefire took effect on January 19.

As the situation evolves, the Israeli military announced on Friday that it has implemented movement restrictions for Palestinians and sealed off several areas within the West Bank amid ongoing security operations. Mayor Brot encouraged residents to maintain their daily routines while staying vigilant. Schools and public transportation will continue to operate as scheduled on Friday.
