RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois underwent a medical assessment on Thursday, creating uncertainty about his upcoming IBF title fight against Joseph Parker scheduled for Saturday.

In light of Dubois’ condition, Martin Bakole, a heavyweight from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was prepared to step in as a replacement and was “on his way” from Africa, according to his promoter, Ben Shalom. However, Dubois’ promoter did not confirm any official decision regarding Dubois’ participation.

Dubois was absent from a press conference held in the Saudi capital on Thursday. Promoter Frank Warren explained that the absence was due to a medical examination.

“At this moment, Daniel is being assessed by a physician, and we will provide updates as soon as we have more information to share,” Warren stated during the conference.

Joseph Parker expressed his hope for Dubois’ health, stating, “If he is unwell, I wish him a speedy recovery. I look forward to Saturday and am eager to put on an exciting show.”

The 27-year-old Dubois had an impressive title defense in September, delivering a devastating fifth-round knockout against Anthony Joshua in front of a crowd of 96,000 at Wembley Stadium. Dubois had claimed the IBF title just three months prior, following its vacancy by Oleksandr Usyk.

The highlight of Saturday’s schedule also features a highly-anticipated rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. Beterbiev emerged as the undisputed light-heavyweight world champion after a close points victory over Bivol last October.
