Mavericks strengthen thin frontcourt by signing 7-2 center Moses Brown

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks have brought aboard the towering 7-foot-2 center Moses Brown with a 10-day contract, aimed at bolstering their thin frontcourt due to the absence of star player Anthony Davis and other team members who are dealing with injuries.

Brown, who has had a diverse career path and spent part of the 2021-22 season with the Mavericks, has been impressive this season in the G League. While playing for the New York Knicks’ affiliate, he has recorded averages of 15.6 points and 14.9 rebounds. Additionally, he appeared in nine games for the Indiana Pacers earlier in the season.

The Mavericks made the announcement regarding Brown’s signing on Thursday, right before their return from the All-Star break, when they will host the New Orleans Pelicans.

This move to add Brown comes as a direct response to injuries that have plagued the Mavs. Anthony Davis has been sidelined with a groin injury incurred during his highly anticipated debut in Dallas after a major trade that involved sending superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks have yet to provide details about when Davis might make a comeback.

In addition, Dereck Lively II, who is in his second year, was already unavailable due to a stress fracture in his ankle. This situation worsened when Daniel Gafford sprained his knee, potentially extending his time off the court for several weeks. Furthermore, Dwight Powell has been out for a month due to a hip injury.

Prior to Brown’s acquisition, the only healthy center on the Mavericks’ roster was Kylor Kelley, a 27-year-old rookie on a two-way contract, who had limited playing time amid the team’s injury woes.

At 25 years old, Moses Brown has played for seven different teams across six seasons. His most extensive tenure was with the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2020-21 season, where he participated in 43 games and reached career-highs of 8.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Over his overall career, Brown has averaged 5.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
