PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Relief pitcher Drew Smith has secured a contract with the New York Mets that could be worth up to $3.75 million over the next two years, contingent on the exercise of his club option for 2026 and his participation in a minimum of 70 games that year.

Although Smith is anticipated to be sidelined for the entirety, or a significant portion, of the current season due to recovery from his second Tommy John surgery, it is expected that he will be back in action by 2026.

His contract, which was confirmed on February 12, includes a base salary of $1 million for the upcoming year. This announcement coincided with the Mets’ finalization of a separate $54 million, two-year deal with first baseman Pete Alonso.

The Mets hold a $2 million option for Smith, who can earn performance bonuses categorized by games pitched in 2026. Specifically, he will receive $50,000 each for pitching in 30, 35, and 40 games, with bonuses of $75,000 for 45 and 50 games, $100,000 for 55 and 60 games, and $125,000 each for 65 and 70 games.

At 31 years old, Smith has spent his entire major league career with the Mets. Last season, he managed a record of 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA and two saves across 19 games before undergoing elbow surgery on July 12. Throughout his six-year tenure in the big leagues, he has a career record of 12-13 with a 3.48 ERA and five saves.

Earlier in his career, Smith faced a similar challenge when he underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2019 but successfully returned to major league play on July 25, 2020, just days after the onset of the pandemic-delayed season.
