GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Tereza Nova, a downhill skier, has come out of a medical coma nearly one month following her serious crash during training for a World Cup event, according to a statement released by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation.

The federation disclosed that after suffering a significant brain injury, the 27-year-old skier was gradually brought out of her induced coma and is set to be transported from her current medical facility in Germany back to the Czech Republic today.

Nova encountered the accident on January 24 while practicing for a downhill race scheduled for the following day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

This incident adds to a troubling trend in the skiing season, marked by severe injuries, including one involving top male downhill skier Cyprien Sarrazin, who had to undergo surgery following a crash in Bormio, Italy. Additionally, the skiing community mourned the loss of promising Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi, who died from injuries sustained during training.

Following her accident, Nova underwent surgery to alleviate brain swelling and also addressed a fracture in her eye socket.

Dr. Markus Gruber, part of the team treating her in a nearby clinic, mentioned that as the swelling and bleeding in her brain stabilized, the team felt confident enough to initiate the process of waking her up, in consultation with colleagues from the neurosurgery department.

Her ongoing recovery will be managed by medical professionals in her home country of the Czech Republic.

Throughout her skiing career, Nova participated in 13 World Cup races but did not secure a position within the top 30. She represented her country at the 2022 Beijing Olympics in four events, achieving her best finish with a 14th place in the Alpine combined.
