MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United reported that the recent decisions to terminate Erik ten Hag’s contract and the exit of Dan Ashworth as sporting director have cost the club over $18 million, as stated in their latest financial results published on Wednesday.
Ten Hag was dismissed on October 28, just three months after being granted a one-year extension to his contract at the club, following an extended period of speculation regarding his position.
At the time of his firing, the team was languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, having secured only five points from nine league matches, including four defeats. Currently, under the management of Ruben Amorim, United finds itself in even worse shape, sitting in 15th place and having suffered 12 losses in 25 league outings, indicating that this season could be their most disappointing in Premier League history.
Shortly after Ten Hag’s exit, sporting director Dan Ashworth, who had joined the club in the offseason after lengthy negotiations from Newcastle, also departed, less than six months into his role.
In their second quarter financial report, Manchester United noted that “exceptional items” costing 14.5 million pounds (equivalent to $18.2 million) are linked to the departures of Ten Hag and multiple coaching staff members.
Ten Hag managed to retain his position after a shocking victory over rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final last May, along with an in-depth year-end analysis of the club led by Jim Ratcliffe, a British billionaire now involved in overseeing United’s soccer operations. Following this review, Ten Hag was issued a contract extension valid until 2026.
Since taking over in November, Amorim’s performance has not improved the situation, with him recently stating that this could be the worst Manchester United squad in the history of the club.
To secure Amorim’s release from Sporting Lisbon, the club invested 11 million pounds (approximately $12 million).
