NEW YORK — For enthusiasts of films and comic books, the journeys of iconic characters like Spider-Man and Iron Man have been a source of fascination for years. A newly announced series of books will delve into the stories behind their creation, offering insights into the Marvel Universe.

On Wednesday, Bloomsbury and Marvel officially revealed a multi-year, multi-volume licensing agreement for a new collection titled “Marvel Age of Comics.” This series will intertwine historical context with personal narratives, beginning this fall with releases such as Stuart Moore’s “Doctor Strange,” Paul Cornell’s “The Mighty Avengers of the 1970s,” and Chris Ryall’s “Daredevil.” The volumes will feature illustrations sourced from Marvel’s extensive digital archive, making the content visually engaging.

This initiative, spearheaded by Marvel, draws inspiration from Bloomsbury’s acclaimed 33 1/3 series, which focuses on compact yet impactful works about influential music figures, ranging from the Clash to Kendrick Lamar. The approach aims to combine academic rigor with a deep appreciation for the material.

Sven Larsen, who serves as vice president of licensed publishing at Marvel, expressed excitement over the collaboration, highlighting Bloomsbury’s expertise in presenting their previous projects. “We’ve admired Bloomsbury’s work on series like 33 1/3, and we eagerly anticipate their approach to the ‘Marvel Age of Comics’ collection, blending their deep respect for the subject matter with unique perspectives and significant publishing history,” he stated.

Haaris Naqvi, Bloomsbury USA’s director of publishing, reflected on his longstanding admiration for Marvel, stating that he fondly recalls reading the comics with his siblings back in the ’80s. The opportunity to work on this series is a nostalgic journey for him. “This project has transported me back to my childhood,” he shared in a recent interview. “I hope that readers will experience a similar connection when they delve into these books.”
