Terrence Shannon Jr., a former guard for Illinois, has turned an embarrassing moment from a jersey retirement ceremony into a positive opportunity for charity. During the halftime of a recent game against Michigan State, his No. 0 jersey was raised upside down to the rafters of the State Farm Center, which led to an apology from the university officials for the error.

On Tuesday, Shannon, who is now a rookie with the Minnesota Timberwolves, took to social media to address the incident. He showcased a T-shirt he created that humorously references the mishap, featuring the slogan “When Life has You Upside Down, Turn It Around,” with the words “Upside Down” printed upside down. Shannon also shared a link for fans to purchase the shirt, mentioning that the profits would go towards the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club located in Champaign, Illinois.

In his announcement, Shannon expressed gratitude to Gameday Spirit and the University of Illinois for their assistance in bringing this idea to fruition. Illinois head coach Brad Underwood openly commended Shannon for his approach to the situation. He remarked, “I couldn’t be any more proud of the way that young man handled that situation – his moment, his moment, all the work that went into it, his moment – and then to turn it around and give it all to charity.” He encouraged Illini fans to support the cause by purchasing the shirt and mentioned his intention to buy a large quantity himself.

Last season, Shannon led the Illinois team to the NCAA regional finals and achieved third-team Associated Press All-America honors, setting a record by scoring 736 points in a single season. The Timberwolves recognized his talent and selected him with the 27th overall pick in the most recent draft.
